The Mississippi Squares is built on fun and fellowship, with an active community involvement. It is a member of the Eastern Ontario Square and Round Dance Association (EOSARDA).  The square dance program follows the Modern Western Square Dancing definitions as described by CALLERLAB at three skill levels:  Basic, Mainstream and Plus.  The round dance program follows the choreographed ballroom style of dancing as defined by the International Association of Round Dance Teachers — Roundalab.  These styles of dancing are popular worldwide.

The club is very active in dance lessons and the recruitment of new dancers at the basic level for both square and round dancing.  To this end, the format on Tuesday nights is Full Mainstream from 7:00 to 7:30 followed by alternating Basic-Teach, Mainstream-Teach tips starting at 7:30.  On party nights, the dance starts at 7:30.  Tuesday dances are always located at Brunton Hall. We regularly have 5 – 6 squares dancing.  Come out for a great evening!

The immediate integration of new dance classes with the mainstream group has, since its inception, proven to be very beneficial for new dancers.  We have a dynamic weekly dance program with a top caller and cuer — for both beginners and experienced dancers.  For learning, all steps are taught at a comfortable rate and in a logical sequence

We are based in Carleton Place, Ontario, and draw our membership from the surrounding area including Smiths Falls, Almonte, Carp, Arnprior, Pakenham, Kanata, Stittsville, Richmond, Munster, Perth and Lanark.  We are only a short drive from Ottawa.

For members wanting to move on to higher levels and develop more dancing skills, the club offers both Round Dancing and square dancing at the Plus Level.

The Wednesday evening Round Dance is an ideal way to socialize with other active couples — either as first-year dancers wanting to learn the dance steps — or as experienced dancers wanting to brush up on your dancing skills, learn new dances and enjoy an evening of dance.  The teaching approach combines the Phase I positions with Phase II steps.  In this way you can progress through new dance skills with your partner in a natural progression to learn new dances more quickly.  The evening includes Phase II level in the first hour and Phase III level in the second hour.

If you are familiar with ballroom dancing, you will recognize many of the steps.  Many feel that our round-dance program is more appealing and exciting because your cuer can lead you through interesting and smooth-flowing combinations of steps that are not practical to remember yourself while dancing.  This is absolutely the best way to learn and master new dance steps.

Square dancing at the Plus level is held weekly on Friday evenings with Plus-Teach tips alternating with Full-Plus tips, including some non-standard positions.  Experienced PLUS dancers enjoy the fast pace of our Friday-evening dances and the regular workshop tips.  Many dances feature easy rounds between square dance tips.  We regularly have 4 – 5 squares dancing.
You can call ahead to verify the dance location for the Friday dances, but this is not always necessary.

Are you an active square or round dancer visiting the Carleton Place or Ottawa area?  We would like to invite you to our dances and workshops.  See our dance schedule.  Many of our dancers are couples, but you don't need to bring a partner.

Our dancers are regular visitors at other clubs in the area.
Up-to-date information about square dancing in the area is on the list of Square Dance Clubs at EOSARDA.
